What is Botox?

Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure that temporarily reduces the appearance of moderate to severe glabellar lines (vertical frown lines between the eyebrows)

Dynamic wrinkles are caused by contractions of the delicate underlying facial muscles every time you smile, laugh or frown. The more emotion you show the deeper these wrinkles and lines are likely to be. These hyperactive facial muscles can give a person an angry, tired, sad, or displeased appearance - even when they are not experiencing that emotion. By freezing these small muscles, we reduce this undesirable effect and reduce the wrinkles from these expressions

  • Frown lines
  • Crow's feet
  • Forehead furrows
  • Skin bands on the neck

Side Effects

Although generally safe, side effects and complications can include:

  • Bruising and pain at the injection site
  • Redness
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Nausea
  • Temporary facial weakness or drooping
  • Very rarely, the toxin can spread beyond the treatment area, which can cause botulism-like signs and symptoms such as breathing problems, trouble swallowing, muscle weakness and slurred speech

How Botox works?

Botox works by blocking the signals from the nerves to the muscles. Once the resting tone of the muscles is weakened, the pull of the muscle relaxes, and the skin flattens out. This is an entirely new approach to treating the aging face. By physiologically weakening the muscles, the natural tone of your skin will remove the wrinkles naturally.

In a simple office procedure, Botox is injected using a fine needle in the overactive muscles. The muscle function becomes weakened, eliminating part or all of its function. Long standing skin creases will soften and may eventually disappear. The result is a softer, more relaxed and pleasant appearance.

Botox takes 3-5 days to take effect and lasts between 3-6 months. Botox is most effective for the frown lines between the eyebrows, but can also be used to lessen the horizontal wrinkles in the central portion of the forehead, and crow’s feet at the corner of the eyes. It is not effective for wrinkles in the middle and lower portion of the face.
